This is my pursuit of my dreams and aspirations in college to have a career in fiber. I have dabbled in many things of the fiber world, but knitting is my main obsession. Occasionally you will see the others pop up.

Man this month flew. I last left you as I was jumping on a plane to the overly warm state of Florida. I had a great time with my relatives celebrating my grandmother’s 88th birthday.

I gave her the September Sockdown (ravelry) Mystery sock that I knit in Sept/Oct and finished on the plane to Florida.

She is doing well considering her Alzheimer’s. You can tell in her birthday pic that she is not sure that the cake is for her. The progression of the disease bummed me out since it had been 2 years since I had been there. Most of the time she was scared of me and would not leave her room when I was left at the apartment to make sure she did not escape (this happened several times while I was there but not left alone with her).

I got to meet my swap partner Lori (aka 1KnuttyKnitter) from SP11. I was spoiling her this round. It was alot of fun to meet her and see a LYS.

During that time I missed my husband and my doggies. There was a doxie to keep me company. Bam Bam is the same age as Fred (the one we lost last December) but definitely heavier than Lexi. I would probably guess that he is twice the weight of our little Anorexic puppy (I promise I feed her she just does not like to eat unless starving – ie left outside all day).

Upon my arrival home, we got a house guest. He and his dog Maggie were no trouble, but Frankie our mild mannered dog felt threatened maybe it was because Maggie was the tallest dog that has been in our house long term.

After this we made our way up to Union, WA to spend the end of the week with my parents and then bring them back for Christmas at our house. On our way up, I got to meet Ranee of Arabian Knits. We met so she could swap a package with me (sorry no pics the yarn was eaten by the stash as soon as I arrived home). She was so sweet. I think there will be many more meetings with her and hopefully her family.

In Union we spend the days hiking and exploring the Olympic Pennisula. My favorite day was went we went hiking on the Dungeness Spit near Sequim.

after

before

Christmas at home was uneventful. Churchable had to work both Christmas eve night and Christmas night. We were blessed by the gifts we recieved. Churchable even finished my Christmas “project” present.

To view the slideshow of adventure click here.

The highlight of my parents trip here our house was when we went Snow shoeing up at Mt St Helens. We have never seen the snow so low. Mostly the snow is higher up and we can use two of the sno parks but this time we could not reach the sno parks because of all the snow. We stopped at a sno park that is normally snow free most of the year. It was a beautiful 2 1/2 mile hike.

sorry that it is sideways. I can’t get it to rotate.

I also received my SP11 reveal package from Robyn of Sweet Little Domestic Life.

She sent me a book that she was published in and a calorimetry that she had knit for me and some yarn. It was a cute sweet package which arrived on the last postal day before Christmas.

I had some super bulky hiding in the stash and decided it needed to go to a better place (aka become useful in a sweater). When I get a chance I will be posting my details on Ravelry. Right now all I have time to is to knit for work.

Well folks, see that nice lovely pie. Churchable made it for me, on tuesday. I am aware that it is now officially Thursday. I will eat some of it before I collapse in bed tonight. I have decided to call that little pie, my “I have reached and made my first deadline” pie.

Yes folks. I am done. I can start blogging about everything I am knitting. Well ok almost everything. It is the season for Christmas knitting.

Larissa of Stitchmarker

Well in addition to trying to finish my designs on time, I went to OFFF (Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival in Canby, OR). I had a great time. My fellow PDX bloggers have done a better job at posting about what they have done and what we did. Check out Cindy’s post. I was her car mate on this trip. (there are more pictures that I just dumped into flickr so click on the pic of Larissa and look around)

click on the pic and it will take you to a slideshow of the yarn.

I was good this month and saved my yarn allowance till the end of the month. I got several hanks of sock yarn. I really wanted semi-solid colors. I got so many.

Well in addition to all this I got my first SP package for SP11. It was awesome. I would love to gush more but me tired. I added the link to the slide show of the stuff. I must say that the yarn is Bamboo. So great.

Now I must apologize for being such a lame blogger, but I am tired. I have been pushing myself this week to finish not just because of my deadline but because I am leaving on vacation bright and early tomorrow. We are headed south through California to Arizona for a family wedding. I hope it turns out well. Our RSVP got lost and they just found out we were coming on Tuesday. From there we are headed North to the National Parks of the area. We will be camping and hiking in the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park to name a few. We will be coming home via Salt Lake and Boise. If you know of good yarn shops, let me know in the comments.

Don’t expect me to poke my head up before the 8th of October. I will be adding comments as I get them when I have computer access. Have a great first week of Socktober.

1. What is the one knitting accessory you could not live without? I can pick three but one seems hard. I think most likely my stitch markers as a whole would be missed the most if the disappeared. That might be why I have about 2-300 of them in different little containers and I still look for more.

2. If you’re heading on vacation, do you take knitting with you? Yes of course. If so, how much and what type of project? I take all my in progress projects which normally are about 4 and then a small project (ie socks or gloves) and a big project to start. I never want to run out. This was proven to me in March when we went to spend a week caring for my MIL and it turned into a month. I had more than enough projects for that time period.

3. Where have you traveled to that you’d consider your favorite spot? Wales and New Zealand. Since I have been to over 35 countries and most of the states, it is hard to choose. I pick Wales because my fav vacation to England was cruising the canal. I pick New Zealand because there is something about volcanic activity, big trees and woolly sheep.

4. What is your favorite knitting book at the moment? No Sheep for You. Do you own it? Yes

5. Do you listen to podcasts? Yes Which is your favorite(s)? Cast-on, Sticks & String, Socks in the city, Stash & Burn, Knit Picks, Ready Set Knit (which can be dangerous to listen to right on release date because they talk about yarn deals), Creative Mom. I have had others but these are the ones that are still active.

What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I love Bamboo. That said I also crave wools and woody fibers. I absolutely do not like fake fibers. I do not consider wood pulps and such fake. I just can’t stand petroleum based fibers, which considering I am allergic to petroleum based face and body products. It’s no surprise.

     2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

I have a circular needle case, dpn case and a crochet hook case from the organized knitter. They were a rather lovely late Christmas / early birthday present from my husband last spring.

     3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I have been knitting since Christmas 1997. So that calculates to almost 10 years. That is kind of a shock for me. I have been crocheting since summer of 1993 (I think, Junior High was a bit fuzzy). I was maybe a beginner for about a day. My first project was a fair isle hat in the round on dpns. I did not know any better, but the book I had said it was a beginner project so I proceeded without hesitation. Since then nothing has scared me, oh ok maybe my first sleeve placement. I stuck with hats, mitts, and gloves for my first 5 years. It took me a little bit longer to get up my nerve to do a sweater and then I started with a vest in the round. I am past the sleeve fear. To me the more complicated the pattern the more fun it is. I have been known to come up with patterns or so modify a pattern that it is no longer the same thing.

     4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

Yes I do. It has a Smorgasbord of things that I want or desire. Sometimes need but have not made a fully educated guess on. I keep it fairly up to date.

     5. What’s your favorite scent?

I love scents that would be described as Christmas baking – cinnamon, clove, coffee, cardamom, chai and such wondrous smells.

     6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?

I have a sweet tooth but my blood does not like my sweet tooth so I limit myself. I try to only have good chocolate in the house since most chocolates contain petroleum products and I get sick really fast. At this current moment, my favorite chocolate bar is Dagoba Chai. I also like some of there other dark chocolates. If you have not tried one for yourself, I recommend buying one for you and trying it and letting me live vicariously through your experience.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

Um . . . I went to art school so lots and lots of stuff. I do spin. My spinning fiber looks jealously at the knitting stash and gets its hopes squashed every time I reach in to get the yarn. I thought I would be tempted to pet it and spin it, if it was at the front of the closet but I think part of me is afraid to spin since it has been so long. I also sew and design clothing when my knitting is not flaunting its fuzzy pet able self in front of my fingers.

     8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I love techno. My fav station is C89.5 a Seattle, WA High School station. My husband on the other hand listens to everything and likes to tease me by asking me who is playing at the moment, which could be one of 50,000 songs that are set on random repeat on his computer/stereo in the living room and piped through the house to my studio. He had serious fun for about a year and a half by asking me about certain songs and me not knowing they were the Beatles. He now gets even more chuckles because when he asks I just blindly answer. “It’s the Beatles! right?” So I do like to listen to music, I just don’t always know who they are. Right now I have mostly been listening to podcasts. I have many that I listen to.

This house has every modern musical convenience. Three portable mp3 player (one is a CD player that reads mp3s), 4 or 5 computers (one is hooked up to a central speaker system), one kick ass car stereo system (that reads burned CDs but not mp3s and I found out last swap can be picky about some burned CDs) and of course the lowly little DVD player that doesn’t know which way to spin and so it gets depressed every once and a while and stops working until you can reteach it to spin clockwise and might be finally biting the dust. I don’t want to lose my knitting companion that plays movies for me.

     9. What’s your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can’t stand?

My favorite colors are fall colors but I tend to gravitate towards greens, blues, browns, burgundy, and orange. I hate pink with a passion. I don’t own a stitch of pink in my wardrobe; my stash on the other hand has one ball that was used in a present and I can’t wait to use and give away. It has gotten much smaller but still here. Now my house contains purple only because my husband when to UW, and he wears purple but it really is not something I want lots of.

     10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I have been married for almost 2 years to a wonderful man fondly called Churchable here in blog land. Currently we have two dog, which is a sweet leaner dog who is ball obsessed and a doxie princess that drives the leaner dog nuts.

     11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

I wear scarfs (I just don’t knit them – I will weave them once my loom is up and running). I also wear hats, mittens (especially fingerless here in the house), and gloves. Ponchos are out. Shrugs are very cool and my shoulder measurement is 16 inch across if that is helpful.

     12. What is/are your favorite item/s to kni
t?

My favorite items are sweaters. I have been really into filling in the holes in my sweater collection. I also enjoy hats and mittens. I almost always have socks going – one for Churchable and one for me. Currently my sock yarn box overflows and it will not fair much better now that I work for Blue Moon Fiber Arts. I don’t plan to use all the sock yarn for human use. I knit dog sweaters out of sock yarn.

     13. What are you knitting right now?

Check out my WIP Wednesdays and FO Fridays. Plus whatever I am knitting for Blue Moon which is normally super secretive.

     14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

I love handmade gifts. I love giving them also.

     15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

I like DPN and Circular (I think I own two maybe three straights, which I might know where they are lurking). I am a Crystal Palace hog. For the extra small sizes, I am wanting to start collecting the Addi Lace circular needles (long enough to do magic loop). I only have US 1. I currently have every size in DPN from US 0 to 11. In circulars I have US 0-13.

     16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

Yes to both. I currently have a wooden swift which churchable thinks is a fun toy to spin obsessively when he is sitting next to it. My ball winder is from Nancy’s Knit Knacks. It is a dream to use. I am glad I got it just in time to start working for Blue Moon. I also have a Nostepinne, which our previous little dog used to gleefully run around the house with it in his mouth unwinding all my hard work until someone found him and stopped him – typically by following the trail of yarn.

     17. How old is your oldest UFO?

I just remembered today that I have a pair of two needle gloves that the second glove needs fingers. This was last knit in the spring of 2001 during my linguistics class. I am thinking about frogging it.

     18. What is your favorite holiday?

I am not sure I have a fav holiday, but churchable loves Thanksgiving considering some years it is also his birthday. I probably like all holidays cause it gives a reason to through a party.

     19. Is there anything that you collect?

Can you call yarn and fabric a collection? I used to have a collection of things but I got tired of having useless items. But I do have a classy collection of frogs and lizards that pop up in different places, such as the centerpiece of my wedding cake. I also collect books on knitting, weaving, and cooking.

     20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I am interested in receiving Lace Addi Turbos in all sizes (except US 1) with 32 or longer. I am really interested in Last Minute Knitted Gifts and Favorite Socks. Each time I go to buy them something shinier catches my eye. I currently receive Interweave Knits, Handwoven and Spin off. I also subscribe to Threads, and Everyday Food.

     21. Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?

Um techniques. None that I can think of at this moment.

         22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes I knit socks. My foot has a circumference of 8 ¾ inches and a length of 9 inches and I wear a size 7.5 regular shoe.

        23. When is your birthday?

         April 26th.

        24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what’s your ID?

yes. It is RChrispy. I never seem to be without this name on the web.

So I know I have been less than posty this last week, The reason behind this is that I am knitting a mystery project. The blob of blue above. Last week, I did not get to work on the socks till Friday night while I waited for Stephanie Pearl-McPhee speak at Powell’s bookstore in PDX.

I had this event on my calendar for over 2 months. I was planning it and asked my friend who just learn to knit to join me. Things were going without a hitch. Churchable would stay with the doggies while we laughed about yarn. Fast forward to Friday, my friend called to say that Stephanie was on TV. We flipped it on and ate breakfast in front of the TV. When they announced that Stephanie was speaking tonight at Powell’s, churchable looks at me and states “Do you want to go?” Ummmmmm…….. “Yeah, we are leaving at 4.” “Oh cool”. “So do you want to come?” “Yeah I think that Stephanie is funny and I would like to hear her talk.”

Click on the pic to find out what Stephanie did to the pink sock.

Let’s just say I was amazed that my hubby would join us. My poor friend has a husband in the camp of extreme CHOKE (Cultural Humiliation Of Knitters Everywhere), but that caused her to laugh even harder because she was going through it. Let’s just say that she knits rather fast for a beginner but her projects take a while because she can’t knit or crochet when her hubby is home. Poor girl.

I got three of the yarn harlot’s books signed. Yeah. I love having such a great bookstore near me that brings in authors. I have done to a few signings. I typically am more interested in the talk than the signing but it is cool to meet them and ask individual questions.

This weekend was weird. Friday was amazingly hot. I wish that we had worked in the yarn but no we waited to do that on Saturday. Well we awoke to rain and that is all it did for the rest of the weekend. I knit on my mystery project and finished the sock.

I cleaned up my studio so I can knit in it again.

The sock? you ask. Yes I have finished a pair of socks in less than a month. Hmmm … I think this is a Blue Moon conspiracy to have me only knit socks with their yarn. Why knit with anything else if Blue Moon is the fastest.
